Mourning Jewelry
Mourning (or memorial) jewelry was worn by mourners to commemorate the the loss and separation of a loved one that passed on from this life to the other side. The person in mourning was comforted by the bond of the deceased through perhaps a lock of hair, jewelry made from the deceased' hair (intricate hair work), or a picture locket. Black was the color most often worn to indicate to others that a person was in a state of mourning period. Even today, the tradition stands although not as pronounced as it was a century ago. Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 through 1901, mourned the loss of her husband, Prince Albert, until the day she too passed on in 1901. Prince Albert passed in 1861; his widow mourned for over forty years! In America, mourning jewelry was popular during the Civil War due to the passing of so many soldiers. Often, upon going to war, the soldier would leave a lock of hair in the event that he did not return. Materials such as jet, gutta-percha, crepe stone, black glass (French Jet), black enamel, hair work, bog oak, pinchbeck, and gold were used in the creation of mourning jewelry. In this collection, I have also included newer pieces for those souls that practice the etiquette of mourning. Today, there are those among us who think this is a perhaps a macabre practice. Grieving the loss of a loved one is a spiritual path to healing one's own soul, soothing the empty black hole one finds through their great loss. Jewelry speaks volumes of passion and love, creating a bridge for souls on both sides to merge as one. Remember...the mourning process is a natural part of healing. Give yourself and your loved ones the time needed. I truly beleive that our lost loved ones are always with us - always!

Onyx and Seed Pearl Mourning Pendant
