Mother’s Day - A Proclamation!
The second Sunday of May is a declaration to the “expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” Personally, I hope everyday is a special day for mothers in the hearts of sons and daughters.  This category is dedicated to my mother, “Mary Gertrude Saravo Day,” a wonderful, kind, high spirited, generous and loving human being. I had thirteen wonderful years with her—I wish there had been more, but I count my blessings for all the love she surrounded me with.  She is a spiritual inspiration in my personal journey through life.  There is much history about Mother's day. From “Rhea” the mother of all Greek Gods and Goddesses, to England's “Mothering Sunday”;  Julia Ward Howe's plight in her “Mother's Day Proclamation” in protest to the carnage of the Civil War; and Anna M. Jarvis, whose promise to her mother, Anna Reese Jarvis, a social abolitionist, to make Mother’s Day a national celebration which was officially signed by then President Woodrow Wilson as an official national holiday.  Finally, the works of James Oppenheim in his writing of “Bread and Roses” and to quote him in part:

“As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,

For they are women's children, and we mother them again.

Our lives will not be sweated from birth until life closes;

Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses.”
