South of the Border
That's south of the United States border including jewelry from Mexico, Central and South America. I have also included native style jewelry made by American jewelry manufactures. There is no intention or pretense of the writer to misrepresent particular pieces not indigenous to a particular people. For centuries natives of Mexico have been crafting silver jewelry taught to them by the Spaniards. During the early part of the twentieth century, American designers living in Mexico formed studios for native silversmiths, sharing knowledge and design concepts. One of the famous towns was Taxco. Mexico was becoming a tourist mecca and there was much jewelry to be offered. Today, much of this jewelry is highly praised by collectors.
