Gold
Gold is the one of the oldest known metals to man. It is a precious metal that Egyptians used in ornamentation. A heavy, malleable metal, gold has bedazzled many. Gold is an excellent metal for jewelry as it is malleable and does not corrode. Gold comes in different karats with 24kt being the purist form however too soft for most jewelry. Other metals are added to gold such as: silver, copper, nickel and zinc to enhance the hardness and color of gold. U.S. gold marks are 10k, 14k, and 18k. Gold comes in different colors by adding variations of metals, thus rose and white gold. Gold in its natural state is yellow. There is gold filled jewelry, also referred to as rolled gold plate - gold layers sandwiched between another metal. And then, gold plate which is a base metal plated with gold. This catagory includes solid gold, gold plate, gold filled, and items of gold color that look very much like gold and could be possibly plated or filled, but are unmarked.
